Increasing driver safety is high on the list of priorities for most fleet managers. Collisions cost dearly in terms of human lives and also the bottom line.

To help fleet operators prevent injuries, reduce claims, protect against insurance premium increases and improve their CSA scores, CalAmp created The Essential Guide to Fleet Safety, a downloadable e-book.

Access this free resource to discover effective ways to make your fleet safer. You’ll learn how fleet telematics, including video telematics, can help transform a fleet safety program from one that’s well-intentioned to one that drives measurable results.

How and why to create a written safety policy

Drivers can’t follow policies they don’t know about. Creating a written safety policy designed around your organization’s most important safety goals is the first step in improving fleet safety. But simply having a policy in place is not enough. Managers up and down the ladder must continually reinforce safety messages and expected practices.

 How to reduce aggressive driving

Aggressive driving, including speeding, factors into more than one-third of all motor vehicle fatalities. Fleet telematics, used in conjunction with fleet management software such as CalAmp iOn™, provides deep insights into aggressive driving behaviors, down to which drivers are prone to which behaviors.

Video telematics adds context to driving incidents by automatically capturing video clips of trigger-based events. Inertial triggers include harsh braking and hard cornering. An AI-enabled smart dash cam enables vision-based triggers such as tailgating and stop sign violations.

Combating distracted driving

How many of your drivers eat or drink behind the wheel or take their eyes off the road to view map displays? How many talk on their cell phone or text while driving? Distracted driving is a factor in 9% of fatal crashes.

Distracted driving can be difficult to combat, but technology can help. Video clips captured by driver-facing smart dash cams can reveal what the driver was doing in the seconds before an incident. Real-time in-cab audio alerts courtesy of AI-enabled road-facing dash cams prevent some of those incidents from happening.

The role of customized driver coaching

One-size-fits-all fleet driver training may not move the needle when bad driving habits are deeply ingrained. Customized coaching enabled by fleet telematics is the stronger approach.

Telematics data and trigger-initiated video clips give managers information and evidence they can use to inform coaching sessions. Coaching based on video clips of incidents, together with the use of in-cab audio alerts, has been shown to slash the incidence of risky driving behavior.

Vehicle maintenance matters

Well-maintained vehicles are safer vehicles. If you’re still using spreadsheets to manage preventive maintenance schedules, it’s time for an upgrade. Good telematics-based fleet management software will provide a dashboard for scheduling just-in-time maintenance based on odometer readings. More efficient still is predictive maintenance.
