The ever-evolving world of technology makes it difficult to not only stay up-to-date with developments in your industry, but to also incorporate these advancements within your own operations. Incorporating technology into fleet operations is not always an easy task, but often, the benefits greatly outweigh the costs – especially when it comes to technologies that help keep your drivers, and the road users they shared the roads with, safe.
In our experience having leadership support for safety, let alone tech-enabled safety, is critical. By strategically communicating early-on with top-level leadership about the benefits and limitations of advancements, you can equip leadership with the insight needed to make an informed, long-term commitment to safer road tech. Here are some easy ways you can gather valuable information to present to your leadership team:
- Attend technology trade shows to gain a better understanding of how to use technology within your company program;
- Explore relationships with professional associations to not only network within your own industry, but to continuously educate yourself on industry trends;
- Find peers that are already realizing the benefits of promising technologies and conduct a benchmarking exchange
- Consult with your risk management team and/or organizations that regularly stay on top of road tech and safety innovation (e.g., your insurance broker/carrier or a trusted think tank)
- Host a strategic planning session with company leadership to discuss issues facing your industry;
- Set up criteria or request for proposal processes to determine priorities in selecting third-party vendors.
But getting leadership on board is just beginning. The most important step is to establish a road safety management team to build an action plan that outlines how these technologies will influence employees at all levels, as well as the company’s tailored approach to implementing these safety solutions. Some tips to developing and deploying an action plan include:
- Defining clear and effective goals, strategies, and intended audience
- Establishing guidelines for experimentation that allow for an agile approach to testing new solutions
- Developing an online system that offers timely access to safety technology policies and program information;
- Tailoring your information system to fit the needs of specific job roles and responsibilities to provide the right information at the right time to the right person; and
- Incorporating a feedback mechanism that ties safer road tech deployments to intended results
- Mitigating potential downside risk by leveraging loss prevention expertise of an insurance partner
- Including regular leadership communications to reinforce the importance of leveraging new approaches within your road safety culture
By successfully taking these initial steps – gaining leadership support and developing an action plan – companies can reap the benefits of today’s technological advances.
