Tag N Go

Enabling Parents to Foster Safe Driving Habits

Based in Colorado Springs, CO, Tag N Go offers a complete GPS safety system designed to assist families, driver educators and insurers to teach and foster safe driving habits that will last a lifetime. Tag N Go is active in the US, Canada, Ghana, South Africa, Macedonia, New Zealand, and Kazakhstan. Simple and easy to use, drivers simply plug the Family Car Tracker (the CalAmp LMU-3030 wireless device) into their car’s OBD-II port, and Tag N Go delivers instant driving behavior information to any smart phone, tablet or PC. Many of the features of the Tag N Go service were created with input from the Drive School Association of the Americas (DSAA), whose 50,000 DSSA-qualified instructors are responsible for teaching nearly 1.1 million new drivers annually. The GPS Safety System puts digital tools at drive instructors’ fingertips to help them better coach and connect with new teen drivers. Tag N Go also provides end-to-end telematics solutions for automotive insurer carriers developing usage based insurance (UBI) programs. Currently, the company is engaged in UBI-telematics pilot programs with two insurers. Tag N Go is creating a powerful relationship between families, driving instructors and automotive insurance industry — all focused on improving driver safety.

The Challenge

The US Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stated in its publication, “FACTS 2010”, that speed was a factor in nearly one-third of all highway fatalities. Furthermore, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for US teens. In 2010, seven teens ages 16 to 19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries. Per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash. Fortunately, teen motor vehicle crashes are preventable, and proven strategies can improve the safety of young drivers on the road. Tag N Go is dedicated to reducing these numbers by measuring, monitoring and decreasing the incidence of crash factors such as speeding through targeted training, reminders and alerts. Correcting unsafe driving habits requires knowledge of the individual’s driving behavior. The key to unlocking that driving performance data is having access to the vehicle’s Onboard Diagnostic port, or OBD-II. Tag N Go’s Family Car Tracker solution required an OBD-II reader and reporting device that could collect time, date, location, speed, cornering and braking data and forward it on to Tag N Go’s servers for analysis and display. For maximum benefit, the device also had to be compatible with the greatest number of passenger vehicles. The answer to the challenge was CalAmp’s recently introduced LMU-3030, with an OBD-II vehicle bus interface that provides access to detailed data on vehicle operating characteristics and driving performance.

The Solution

The Tag N Go GPS Safety System is an all-in-one solution combining in-vehicle hardware, in the form of the CalAmp LMU-3030 location and messaging device, CDMA communications for transmitting location, vehicle and driving performance data; and software for evaluating driving performance, calculating driving scores, generating reports and alerts, and powering social networking services. For a one-time hardware fee and low monthly service charge, consumers can know where their family’s drivers are at all times, and how those drivers are performing over time.

Product Features include:

  • Real Time Tracking – precise location updates at least every 10 seconds, delivered to the user’s PC, tablet or smartphone.
  • DriveScoreTM – grades every trip, measuring how safely the driver is driving based on actual speed versus the posted speed limit as well as acceleration, braking, and cornering. Every trip starts at 100, and deductions are made for hard turns, speeding, rapid acceleration and heavy braking.
  • FollowMeTM – shares live trips with the driver’s family and friends via email, Facebook, or Twitter, so others know where they are and their anticipated arrival.
  • Safety Zones – parents can set up geo-fence areas for authorized or unauthorized driving and receive exception notices when their teen drivers enter or leave these designated zones.
  • Alerts – email and/or text messages based on pre-set conditions, such as excessive speeding, when a vehicle enters or exits a predefined geo-fence area (home, work, school, etc.) and other criteria.

The Family Car Tracker, CalAmp’s LMU-3030, collects numerous pieces of information but the most relevant are the ABC’s+S — Acceleration, Braking, Cornering and Speeding. This information is critical to providing feedback to the customer about their driving habits and how to improve their driving behavior to get a better DriveScore and grade. Data is collected every one to 10 seconds, depending on the location of the vehicle. It is then presented to the customer in the form of a trip replay where they can actually see what occurred. Viewing actual driving events allows them to understand how they are driving, and adjust their behavior in order to become a safer driver. Long term, all drivers in the family will have the opportunity to become better, safer drivers, reducing collisions and insurance claims, and potentially reducing their auto insurance premiums. The Tag N Go GPS Safety System is changing the way family’s drive, helping parents monitor and coach good driving habits, providing an extra measure of connection, safety, security and peace of mind in our increasingly mobile world.
