WiMAX

WiMAX is an IP-based, wireless broadband access technology that provides performance similar to Wi-Fi networks with the coverage and quality of service (QoS) of cellular networks. WiMAX is well suited for Smart Grid applications due to its higher bandwidth, longer range access, and better mobility and security. Plus, it is complementary to many technologies already in place.

WiMAX can be used around major grid assets, like substations, to collect data from phasor units. These monitor the reliability of the grid and collect information like voltage, current and frequency in real time. It can also be used to deliver services like mapping information and video tools for mobile workers, or provide video services for facility monitoring. Since WiMAX technology is based on standards that are already being used in the industry, it is easily deployable. This is a communications standard that allows utilities to use their networks for more than automated metering. It allows for enabling renewable energy sources, and evolving applications such as alternative energy and storage technologies on a community level.
