Cellular IP - Routable IP Address vs. Non-routable IP Address
Overview
This technical application note is available to help anyone that wants to determine if the cellular IP Address of the cellular modem (882 or the Vanguard) is internet routable or not.
In IPv4 there are 3 non-routable IP ranges which are called reserved. You'll see them listed as the:
Class A reserved space 10.0.0.0/8
Class B reserved space 172.16.0.0/12
Class C reserved space 192.168.0.0/16
Class E reserved space 240.0.0.0/8
Companies and organization use these above ranges on the inside of their networks so these IP non-routable ranges are being used in millions of networks around the world.
How to Determine if Your Cellular Modem is Internet Routable
What is my cellular IP address?
With the Landcell-882 or with the Vanguard cellular modem the cellular IP Address can be found in the Home page under PPP.
After having retrieved this information out of the web pages of the cellular modem, we need to determine if this cellular IP Address is:
a) Static or Dynamic
Reset the cellular modem and wait until PPP goes up again and note the PPP IP Address. If this has changed it is Dynamic. If it remains the same it is Static.
b) Private or Public
If the PPP IP Address is in the following range, it’s Private. Other than that it is Public.
Service Type?
With the 882 or with the Vanguard cellular modem the Service type and other cellular information can be found in the Home page under Connection Status.
Mobile Initiated
One important test to do right after having provision/activate a cellular modem is to know if he can reach the internet.
To do so, connect a PC to the cellular modem Ethernet port using a RJ45 Ethernet cable and configure the network adaptor as follow.
Where:
The IP Address is the LAN IP of your Laptop/PC.
The Default Gateway is the LAN IP of the cellular modem.
The Preferred DNS should be = to the LAN IP of the cellular modem.
Setup Example:
From the Laptop/PC, open a CMD Prompt and ping www.google.com or any public IP Address.
In this case, YES the cellular modem can initiate calls and connect to external application devices that have a public IP Address just like www.google.com.
Mobile Terminated
One another important test to do right after having provision/activate a cellular modem is to determine if the cellular IP Address is reachable from anywhere from the internet or from the application server.
Setup Example:
From the Application Server PC, open a CMD Prompt and ping the cellular IP Address of the cellular modem. (PPP IP)
Note: If all pings timeout, try to open the unit web pages or telnet/SSH.
- Http connection to the cellular modem: Http://74.198.16.92:8080

-
SSH connection to the cellular modem:
If you have a login prompt it mean that you are connected to the cellular modem.
In this case, YES the cellular modem can terminate calls and accept incoming connections from an external device connected to the Internet.
